The Sticking Point: Debate Over Teflon

Bucky Bailey knows that he looks different from other people.

Bailey, who is 22 years old, was born with a birth defect that has required 30 surgeries.

"The worst part would be just looking in the mirror sometimes and saying, 'Why me?'," he said. "What did I do to deserve this?"
His mother believes she now knows why her son was born with a birth defect, Target 5's Lisa Parker reported on Thursday. Sue Bailey blames a chemical she worked with while she was pregnant for making her son's life so difficult. Bailey worked with the chemical C-8, which is one of the ingredients in Teflon.

OK, I'm scared... I may be buying some new pots and pans!!!

Hey, I stumbled across this site by blogsnob hopping.

I'm a chemist and I watched the news feed and unfortunatley I have to say that they are giving some slightly false information. First of all, Teflon and C8 are not the same thing. Teflon is a fluropolymer, true, but it is also known as poly(tetrafluroethylene) which has a monomer (repeat unit) that looks something like this F2C=CF2. C8 is used in the manufacture of teflon but by the time your nonstick pans reach your kitchen it has been long gone from the product. Plant workers who aren't following safety regulations and victims of bad chemical waste treatment habits are the victims of this but people who want their eggs in the morning have nothing to fear unless they eat their pans. In that case, it is the glue that holds the teflon to the pan that is to be feared.

Thanks for that info! It doesn't surprise me that the media is giving some hyped up info.

I will be able to cook feeling a little bit safer now!

Later...
RAT
