OK, here's the deal. Over the weekend my 6 year old daughter went to a birthday party at the theater to watch 'Racing Stripes.' For those of you who don't know 'Racing Stripes' is about a zebra who wants to be a race horse. You know, your basic talking animal movie with some mild crude humor, no big deal... The problem is that one of the trailers that the theater showed has scared the living shit out of my daughter and now she's afraid of running faucets, bath tubs, ceilings, etc...
I am, or I should say my wife, is about to open a big giant can of whoop ass on the theater and the MPAA.
What I want to know from you is whether you think that this trailer was appropriate to be shown before 'Racing Stripes?' I would greatly appreciate your comments!
Watch the trailer here:

DARK WATER TRAILER

Umm... Yeah, ok I watched it & NO WAY is this at all appropriate for a family movie trailer! I am an adult and it unnerved me. I would think anything by the guy who wrote the Ring should be an automatic no-brainer as being scarier than hell and you should give them hell, I would
First of all, that movie looks really stupid.
Second of all, absolutely inapproppriate. It would have scared the crap out of me when I was 6, too. Open the can, in fact, open a whole 55-gallon drum.
No way is that appropriate! They should have more sense than that! Horrible! My 4 year old would have been scared too!
Definitely inappropriate. What was their problem?
The movie looks really good, though!
Yes..I also agree. PG movies (or any for that matter) should only show trailers of the same listing. They must be able to get away w/this by saying "This film is not yet rated". I'd be pissed, as a matter of fact, I'd probably snap right there & demand my $$ back & free tickets to another showing when they fix their preview polices.
I would definitly have a problem with it. I would have someone's arse for that one; especially since it is on a children's movie.
Rat, your daughter is a wuss. If she can't handle a movie trailer, how do you think she's gonna do in the real world? Working in a cubicle ain't no bed of roses, my man.........
They can show whatever they want to show as a preview, on the other hand, this is why I don't take my kids to movies, I buy or rent or best of all check out of the library the DVD. They don't make money off of me directly when I go to the libarary, and I never have to watch their advertisements. Since you did take your child to this, and it was piss poor judgement on the theaters part to show that bit of schlock, I would say you have every reason to bitch. And I would as well.
I agree with most of the posters. This should not be shown as a preview to a childrens movie. Same thing happened a while back when I took my daughter to see some other kids movie. They showed the trailer for that DeNiro movie, Hide and Seek. I thought that was entirely inappropriate as well.
As to the movie itself, it looks typical, but any chance to see Jennifer Connelly in a wet shirt is OK by me.
Wow! You are overflowing with intelligence! The stuff that we show on this version of IHMC is basically what any teenage boy can go and buy from the magazine racks at Walgreen’s. There is no age limit for magazines like Stuff, FHM and Sports Illustrated. I will admit that Naughty Bits does some times cross the line a bit.
Comparing this site to a movie theater doesn't hold up. People choose to come here and can leave at their own will. Feel free to leave if you dislike IHMC so much. See how that works? In the case of my daughter she was at a party which was more or less a captive audience. She couldn't simply get up and walk out, she's only 6. Had I been there I would have taken her out of there ASAP.
Anyway, I appreciate your opinion. I somewhat agree that I would have liked the trailer when I was a kid. Then again I'm a boy and I dig scary stuff like that. Girls handle things in a completely different way as I'm learning...
Later...
RAT
P.S. - Feel free to swear some more if it makes you feel better. ;-)
I just got off of the phone with someone regarding this issue. I'll post an update tomorrow. Apparently this is a BIG deal!
teach your kid whats real and whats not cause the theatre isnt gonna do jack if you bitch. if a little 3 minute trailer scares your kid you need to give her a reality check anyway and give yourself one while your at it. whats the point of pissing and moaning and asking someones opinion anyway your gonna do what your gonna do regarldess of what anyone says. so you can either cowboy up and do it or stfu and walk away
One would figure that after 6 years of parenthood that even a simple minded reject such as yourself would get the hang of parenting. KIDS GET SCARED. And like a number of people above have said what the fuck are you thinking man? god obviously gave you balls as you have a kid but he sure as fuck didnt give you brains. YOU'RE RUNNING A FUCKIN PORN SITE DUMBASS. You have absolutely no right to complain let alone even bitch about the fact that you're daughter is scared of water. (you live in a trailer park by any chance?) Reassure her its not real like any logical person would and shut yer damn piehole. The End.
First thing, everyone knows the damn internet isnt secure, and any kid gettin on the internet by themselves probably already knows what he/she should and shouldnt look at and what site blah blah blah... main point is that in a public sitting of a movie, parents feel SECURE that the family showing will be meant for the family. (small children) By violating his security, i understand the arguement...unfortunately, its not the theaters fault in my eyes...ok lets face it folks, the world has become money.. and if anyone can sell anything they will. For a child yea, that trailer may seem scary, but for all the others that GO WITH THAT CHILD TO THAT MOVIE may think it is neat and attention will be towards that trailer's movie. Was it wrong, perhaps, did it grab all the other people's attention yes...obviously.. Perhaps mentioning it to the manager my help, but dont bitch, think of it in their shoes.
You're right that they market to the parents as well as the kids.
In this case though the theater was booked soley for a 6 year olds birthday party. The audience was 4 adults and about 15 kids.
Hey wow this is sad. Are you a fag?
OMG that trailor was so scary, all that dark running water, NOOOOOOO. ROFL. OK, so you run a porn site, and the internet is so secure, just like the world is so secure, send your 6 your old to a movie theatre assuming she'll never see anything that might scare her, and cry when she sees something that has nothing explicit but makes her imagination run a bit wild. Your an idiot parent who expects the world to censor itself from your daughter and when it doesn't you can't take responsibility for your own faults. You probably try to shelter her from everything and so stupid things like water running from walls shocks her. Your daughter is gonna be one of them spoiled sheltered little brats that suddenly finds herself overwhelmed in the real world and rebels and becomes a slut, and of course that is the fault of a semi-creepy little movie trailor she saw when she was 6 years old and not a chance it could be the fault of the parenting she recieves all her life. Dumbass.
Kinda funny how all of the assholes come out at night
Wow! If nothing else I'm making a bunch of assholes spend a bunch of time on IHMC! Make sure you click the ads you stupid fucking bastards!
You do realize that getting people to spend time and comment is the actual goal here, right? I could block your IPs or close comments if I really wanted to but that's no fun.
I would like to thank everyone who gave inteligent feedback!
RAT you should contact a lawyer and ask his opinion on this, i actually think you have a nice case and im surprised no one else has done it before (to my knowledge). And ignore that dumb fuck's comments oviously he doesn't know how to be a parent.
Hey 'wow this is sad'. You finally took it too far with the comments about my family so I blocked you and dropped your comments. Go find another IP and start over. Why do you feel compelled to waste your time???
You definitely have a good chance for a lawsuit although I don't believe in that shit unless there was malicious intent.
I just showed my 2 boys this trailer one is 10 and the other 5. My 10 year old was completely unphased by it and my 5 year old said he thought it was a little scary and started to leave the room. My guess is if my 5 year old saw this with out any family member around he may have freaked out.
Now you have to ask yourself a question, what would you have done if you were the parent responsible for all of these kids and this trailer came on?
The amazing part here is that the trailer is approved for all audiences. That is a complete screw up.
Personally I can't wait to put a little black dye in the hat water heater tonight before my son takes a bath.
you asked for opinions, expect to get opinions for people that both agree AND disagree...and stop crying, grab a tissue...and continue life. My god, some people are such whiney, spoiled little brats when they should be adults. This country is getting pathetic. Go ahead, try to sue the people who rated/made/allowed the trailor to be put in the theatre for the kiddy movie, teach your daughter to exploit everything she can and sue for retarded reasons. She'll be a great person when she grows up. Don't forget not everything in the real world is pretty zebras prancing around. Maybe it was a lil scary for a six year old...what are you gonna whine about in court though? No blood, no sex, no guts...just runny water and faucets turning themselves on. BOO! I sure hope that didnt make you jump. Please dont sue me. GROW UP.
Yes I did ask for opinions and I expected to get both sides. I respect and accept your opinions. Some I agree with some I do not. I even agree with some of your points, more than you probably think.
For the most part your comments are constructive and welcome. I hated to delete and block the other dude but he decided to take it to a personal level.
For anyone reading this I'd like to clarify that this has nothing to do with lawsuits or trying to get anything in return for the theaters bad judgement. I was simply curious about what some of you thought.
I also get affiliate credits for each time the trailer is watched. Just kidding. It has been watched 279 times so far so I wish that were true...
Don't worry lol, I won't sue you! ;-)
I'd love to know how many of these Assholes that are saying, there is nothing wrong with the trailer or metioning your maintaining this site as qualifications of what you want your child to see, actually have children. Just because we as adults like to see some T&A from time to time doesn't mean I'm going to take my kid to a strip club. I agree with your outrage. Similarly I find the ABC Family channel offensive in that they will show homosexually themed movies. Again I don't care what adults want to watch, but I do try and protect my child.
However, I'll do my Kerry bit now and say that we are in too litigeous of society. I don't let my child watch the ABC Family Channel and I'd simply suggest you don't patronize the theatre that has show their poor judgement.
Now don't get me started on Walmart...
It looks to me that the MPAA needs some regulation as to the ratings of trailers. Saying this is "approved for all audiences" is irresponsible.
When I take my children to the theater, we get our seats that either my wife or I take the kids out of the screening room until the movie begins.
A six-year-old child believes everything they see; that is their stage of learning. You may never be able counteract fully the effects of her new fears.
Just telling her it is not real may not convince her, and while she will act convinced in your presence, she may act-out or sublimate the fears into other areas: fear of dark rooms, elevators, anything appearing on her ceiling, shadows at night on her ceiling.
Be safe; if you can afford it take her to a recognized child psychologist now. Get it out of her mind before she has a chance to expand the fear.
Ok, I'd have to agree that that is a little fucked up. It's not really something that I personally would want a six year old kid to watch.
Hey JJ - Just like clockwork the reasonable people have come back!
Hey 3 Monkeys - What about Walmart??? I need a new post to stir things up!
LOL!
Basically the same thing that's been being said in a lot of other sources. Overly aggresive purcahsing practices. Importation of cheaper chinese products. Ruining local retail establishments, etc. Check out the bit pbs did at this link.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/walmart/view/
A close friend owns one of the company's that is interviewed in the piece.
Because of our idiotic expectations that as Americans we are entitled to buy cheap shit we are destroying our own economy from within.
Similar to the movie topic, my wife and I are doing our bit by not patronizing them any more. I'd love to share more info than what is in link, but with my luck I'd get sued.
Largely, it's a matter of imagination, which dulls over time. So, yes, a 6 year old will imagine more, but there was nothing scary or violent other than a scared looking woman and "scary" music. None of the posts mention what exactly is inappropriate. Can someone offer what exactly was inappropriate about it?
Sorry, I'm the father of 3 but I don't think any of my kids (2 girls,1 boy) would be bothered much by that trailer. I'm more concerned with the fast track to adulthood (sexual relations, etc.)that our kids get on TV and even in Disney movies. Let them be kids for cryin out loud. I'm a mean ogre for blocking shows that their friends see.
I agree with that too. Our job is to protect them from seeing things that are not age appropriate. Horror, sex, drugs, gore, whatever.
Some day some of you that are bitching will have kids and you'll gain an understanding about this that you don't yet have. I sure did...
It was an R rated trailer before a PG rated movie, For crying out loud.
