Kettle Chips launches mature cheddar with Adnams Broadside flavou

Beer and crisps are a match made in heaven, but Kettle Foods is treading bold new ground with its new beer flavoured crisp.

Kettle Chips mature cheddar with Adnams Broadside flavour combines two pub staples the Southwold brewer's beer with a strong ploughman's cheese.

Kettle Foods marketing director Peter Wilson said: "To our knowledge, this is the UK's first ever real beer-flavoured chip. As such, it will appeal to all lovers of good English ale.

"We couldn't use just any old beer; we had to use the award-winning Broadside from our friendly neighbours at Adnams in Southwold - just a short trip from Kettle's home in Norwich."

A 62-year-old retired accountant from Nevada swallowed 247 peppers in eight minutes to win the Jalapeno Eating World Championship at the State Fair of Texas.

Richard (The Locust) LeFevre won $2,000 for prevailing in Sunday's contest, which was sponsored by the International Federation of Competitive Eating.

"I love to eat, and I love to compete, so the two go pretty well together," said LeFevre, the world's eighth-ranked eater according to the federation.

LeFevre was one of four professional eaters who took the top four places in the competition.

Dr. Daniel DeMarco, a gastroenterologist and director of endoscopy at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, said the amount of jalapenos consumed in an eating contest is more harmful than the burn.

"It's really pretty stupid," DeMarco said. "Like any sort of abuse of your body, it doesn't make any sense."

He said long-term complications are unlikely, but there are some risks.

"If they get sick, they're going to be vomiting it up, and that can cause esophageal tears," he said.

fingerfood.jpg
Breeders of crickets say the insects have become "finger food for beer drinkers" in an age of increasing prosperity in Vietnam compared with the recent past when they might have been food for the hungry or for wartime soldiers surviving in the jungle.

Businessman Le Thanh Tung raises hundreds of thousands of the flying insects in barrels and sells them to restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, the Southeast Asian country's largest urban area, or to other breeders in neighbouring provinces.

"The taste is very particular, very special and it smells good and tastes delicious but it is very difficult to compare cricket to other meat," said Tung, 28, suggesting that crickets are an acquired taste.

At his small farm and restaurant about 25 km (16 miles) west of the city center, a plastic-covered menu with photographs of cricket dishes offers "young crickets deep fried," "cricket salad," "breaded cricket," "cricket noodle" and "peppered cricket."

roach.jpg
Why wait in line when you can just eat a cockroach? That's the question Six Flags Great America is asking its thrill seekers during its Halloween-themed FrightFest. The amusement park is daring customers to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach in exchange for unlimited line-jumping privileges.

The promotion, which has Lake County Health Department officials shaking their heads, starts Oct. 7.

Anyone who chows down the entire 2- to 3-inch horned cockroach gets a pass for four people to cut to the front of ride lines through Oct. 29.

Park officials insist it's safe to eat the crunchy critters, but health officials are cautioning participants.

Consuming live roaches might increase risks of gastrointestinal illness and allergies, according to Bill Mays, Lake County Health Department's community health director.

Cockroach eaters will have to sign waivers and still pay admission fees, said Six Flags spokesman James Taylor.

The bug buffet continues with a cooked roach eating contest Oct. 13 -- Friday, Oct. 13.

Taylor says he's hoping someone can beat the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records feat in which a British man downed 36 cockroaches.

"I've heard people say, 'Wow,' 'Ew,' a lot of one-worders," Taylor said. "A lot have said that they wouldn't eat a cockroach, but they sure would like to see someone else do it."

A Chicagoan has set a new eating record by scarfing down 44 kolaches in eight minutes.

Patrick Bertoletti won $1,500 in the International Federation of Competitive Eating event held in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Kolaches are fruit-filled pastries that are beloved in Czech culture.

The 21-year-old Bertoletti has a winning strategy. He dunks the kolaches in water and swallows them whole.

He's a culinary arts student, and is regarded as an up-and-comer in the competitive eating world. He's ranked Number Four by the federation.

Among his accomplishments are ingesting 5 3/4 pounds of corned beef and cabbage in 10 minutes, 1 3/4 gallons of vanilla ice cream in eight minutes, and 10.8 pounds of key lime pie in eight minutes.

Takeru Kobayashi chomped through a record 58 brats at the Johnsonville World Bratwurst Eating Championship on Saturday, easily winning another tasty title and slicing through the record of 34 1/2 set last year by Sonya Thomas.

"They're good," Kobayashi said through a translator. "I want to take some home."

Kobayashi earned $8,000 for his effort. There was no extra charge for the 16,820 calories, 1,450 grams of fat and 19 days worth of the recommended amount of sodium he consumed in besting Joey Chestnut and Thomas in front of a crowd of about 3,500 people attending Sheboygan Jaycees Brat Days.

MONROE, Conn. A 46-year-old man is accused of assaulting his wife with a carrot, causing her to lose sight in one eye. Roderick Vecsey is charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Pamela Vecsey, 46, underwent six hours of surgery after being hit in the left eye with the vegetable Saturday night, but doctors were not able to restore her vision, prosecutor Stephanie Damiani said.

The couple was arguing when Roderick Vecsey tossed the carrot, Damiani said.

Roderick Vecsey told Judge Patrick Carroll that it was a terrible accident, and was advised to remain silent.

The judge set a hearing for Thursday. Vecsey is currently free after posting $500 bond.

HotLand Corp. President Morio Sase, right, inspects his fast-food Gindaco chain chef Koutou Seki grilling octopus dumplings, known in Japan as takoyaki, at one of his chain restaurants in Tokyo Monday, May 22, 2006. If Sase has his way, hungry teenagers around the world will soon be snacking on something more exotic than McDonald's hamburgers: takoyaki. With already over 350 takeaway stores in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Sase's Gindaco chain is one of a barrage of fast-food companies bringing lowbrow Japanese chow to overseas markets. heart-attack-burger.jpg
Despite having a charming ballpark just outside St. Louis, the Gateway Grizzlies will likely never be renowned for their brand of baseball — one step below Single-A ball.

It's sweet like a doughnut, and then you've got the hamburger. You’ve read that right. It's a burger with cheese and bacon, sandwiched between a Krispy Kreme doughnut — a heart attack waiting to happen.

For a mere $4.50 it's breakfast, dinner, and a little dessert all in one. That it packs up to 1,000 calories — the donut alone has 10 grams of sugar — doesn't seem to faze diabetic diner Floyd Schuetz.

“Oh, I’ll have another one of these,” he says.

“With minor league baseball we have to work extremely hard to get fans to come out here,” says the Grizzlies’ Jeff O’Neill.

Which begs the question — what's next?

“We were in the concession stand the other day trying to come up with 'Baseball's Best Pizza.' "

Why don't I think of stuff like this.....

hoffa-hand.jpg
Residents in Oakland County, Mich., near the site of the search for Jimmy Hoffa are having a little bit of fun with it.

Milford Township businesses are selling T-shirts, special salads, and even baked goods.

The bakery has a hot seller with its Jimmy Hoffa cupcakes.

They have a plastic green hand emerging from chocolate-flavored sprinkles and frosting that looks like dirt.

The bakery started selling the Hoffa cupcakes when authorities invaded Milford, Mich., recently, looking for the remains of the former Teamsters chief. Co-owner Laura Helwig said they've sold more than 500 of them in just a few days.

They're going for 95 cents each. She said one FBI agent ordered three dozen Hoffa cupcakes to take to his buddies working at the dig site.

That's nasty! Chicago bans foie gras in restaurants

2006-04-27_131525.jpg

CHICAGO (AFP) - Chicago has banned the sale of foie gras in its restaurants because city officials think the French delicacy is cruel to ducks and geese.

Under a city ordinance the ban will be imposed by September. Fines will range from 250 to 500 dollars for every day that a restaurant is caught serving the dish.

"It's terrible!" chef Didier Durand, proprietor of Cyrano's Bistro and a spokesman for the Illinois Restaurant Association, told AFP.

"In Chicago they banned smoking (in restaurants) now foie gras - what's next? Sex?"

The ban is an attack on personal freedom and will lower the "gastronomic level" of the city, Didier said.

Foie gras aficionados will now be forced to dine at home if they wish to indulge. A situation which could lead to a new type of Chicago speakeasy as fans find ways around the prohibition.

But proponents of the ban say that it is the city's job to prevent animal abuse.

Diner Greeter Turkey Becomes Dinner

rufus.jpg

For six months, Rufus the wild turkey beguiled area residents and served as unofficial greeter, pet and tourist attraction at the Jacques Spur Junction Cafe.
But someone decided to turn him into dinner on the opening day of turkey hunting season Saturday.
"I heard the shot and got up to look down the street and saw a guy wrestling with a turkey," Sarah Berna, a waitress at the northern Idaho cafe, told the Lewiston Tribune. "I knew it was Rufus."
Berna said the hunter was an older man who drove an older model Chevy Blazer with Idaho plates, parked about 50 yards from the cafe in Culdesac, about 10 miles east of Lewiston. Rufus put up a fight, Berna said, even as he was grabbed by a leg and thrown through the top hatch of the Blazer.

Puking In Billings Montana......

At home, Evelyn Miller couldn't make it to the bathroom on time. In the hospital, she just didn't come out. "All the time I was there, I was going to the bathroom," said Miller, who spent three days in the hospital after contracting what health officials think was Norwalk virus. "I've never been so sick in my whole life."

Miller, 83, was among hundreds of people in the Billings area sickened in an outbreak of the highly contagious virus that began a couple of weeks ago.

She thinks she contracted it at the Golden Corral restaurant, where she and her sister ate lunch on March 29. Both Miller and her sister, Rosetta Foley, became violently ill the next day.

"I started vomiting, and I had diarrhea," Miller said. "I couldn't make it to the bathroom. I got some milk, and I threw that up. I got some water, and I threw that up."

Then reports began trickling in that connected the virus to Golden Corral.

The buffet-style restaurant closed on Wednesday for 24 to 48 hours for a "top-to-bottom cleaning," according to company spokeswoman Pam Ritz.

"We're talking about every doorknob, every drawer pull, all the light switches," Ritz said. "We really can't tackle that with customers coming in and out."

Health officials said the virus was probably on a surface inside the restaurant, not in the food.

Mrs. Manocloth is Swedish & they eat this at Christmas time..... Tasty!!!

stink-fish.jpg
Some say surstromming, a fermented herring, smells like rubbish left out in the sun for days.

But now the fish has been banned from several major airlines, classified along with dangerous weapons like shoe bombs and firearms.

The Baltic herring is fermented in barrels for months before being put in tin cans, where the fermentation process continues.

The decision has made many Swedes very angry indeed. Surstromming is as Swedish as Volvo and Ikea. Some say it is simply rotten fish, which smells like rotten fish. Others argue it is the finest of delicacies.

But now major airlines like British Airways and Air France argue the cans are pressurised goods, and must be classified as potentially explosive. That has made producers of the surstromming choke on their fermented fish, calling the airlines' decision "culturally illiterate".

It is a myth, they say, that the tinned fish can explode.

They admit, however, that a punctured tin would emit a foul smell, and that the content might spill quite forcefully, like a punctured can of beer.
