MIAMI - The 3-year-old in the photograph had her mother's nose, big brown eyes and two baby teeth showing in her wide smile.

But by the time Marlie Casseus was 14, what she saw in the mirror bore no resemblance to the girl in the picture — or any girl. Whatever was under Marlie's skin looked like a basketball, or two eggplants. All that remained of her nose were two distended nostrils. A single tooth poked through the stretched membrane of her upper lip. She had one good eye.

One night last year she stood at the mirror in her family's home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, making slashing motions with a knife, as if she wanted to cut the massive deformity out of her face.

Instead, that has been accomplished by a team of Miami doctors who performed four operations to cut away the 16-pound monster, replace bone and release the girl inside.

Dr. Jesus Gomez, the maxillofacial surgeon leading the teams operating on Marlie at Holtz Children's Hospital, says the mass that engulfed her face probably started growing when she was as young as 5.

"She didn't have any mouth. She didn't have any nose," said Gomez.

navysub.jpg

The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS San Francisco (SSN 711) in dry dock to assess damage sustained after running aground approximately 350 miles south of Guam Jan. 8, 2005. The Navy former dry dock known as “Big Blue” is capable of docking ships that weigh up to 40,000 Long Tons. The Navy certified Big Blue for the one-time docking of San Francisco. San Francisco is the second fast-attack submarine to be attached to the forward-deployed Submarine Squadron Fifteen, home ported on board Naval Base Guam.

Outdated charts may have been partially at fault in the undersea grounding of a U.S. nuclear submarine last weekend, according to an agency that analyzes satellite imagery and produces maps for the Defense Department.

Officials at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in Bethesda said yesterday the main chart likely used by the USS San Francisco did not reveal any obstacle anywhere near the boat on the floor of the Pacific last Saturday about 350 miles south of Guam.

FBI investigates laser beam directed into airplane cockpit

CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities are investigating a mysterious laser beam that was directed into the cockpit of a commercial jet traveling at more than 8,500 feet. The beam appeared Monday when the plane was about 15 miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the FBI said. "It was in there for several seconds like (the plane) was being tracked," FBI agent Robert Hawk said. The pilot was able to land the plane, and air traffic controllers used radar to determine the laser came from a residential area in suburban Warrensville Heights.

Hawk said the laser had to have been fairly sophisticated to track a plane traveling at that altitude. Authorities had no other leads, and are investigating whether the incident was a prank or if there was a more sinister motive. In Colorado Springs, Monday night, two pilots reported green pulsating laser lights shined into their cockpits. Both the passenger plane and a cargo plane landed without problems. Police dispatched patrol cars and a helicopter to a neighborhood to investigate but found nothing. FBI agents were continuing to conduct interviews, agency spokeswoman Monique Kelso said. Federal officials have expressed concern about terrorists using laser beams, which can distract or temporarily blind a pilot.

A memo sent to law enforcement agencies recently by the FBI and the Homeland Security Department says there is evidence that terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons. Authorities said there is no specific intelligence indicating al-Qaeda or other groups might use lasers in the United States. In September a pilot for Delta Air Lines reported an eye injury from a laser beam shone into the cockpit during a landing approach in Salt Lake City. The incident occurred about 5 miles from the airport. The plane landed safely. Lasers are commonly used in a number of industries and are featured in outdoor light shows. The FAA mandates that laser light shows must register their locations and the lights cannot be directed above 3,000 feet. Lasers are also often used by construction companies to line up foundations. Interfering with a commercial flight is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

HELLO - DUH!
This is standard shit you can buy on the net. People have ben buying these for a long time now because they have a cool Star Wars light saber affect. If you see below it would be real easy to use a telescope to keep the light on the cockpit of a plane.

Explosion Flattens Small Building in Minn.

azx.jpg

RAMSEY, Minn. (AP) - An explosion leveled a small building on a commercial strip Tuesday morning, and at least one person was pulled alive from the rubble. Dozens of firefighters searched for anyone else who might have been in the building. The cause of the blast was not immediately known. A small flame was visible in the wreckage. Byron Reid, who works for Earth First Computer Recycling a block away, said the blast shook his building in Ramsey, a suburb northwest of Minneapolis. Reid said he saw rescuers pull one man out of the rubble. ``It looked like he was burned pretty bad,'' he said. The building housed the offices of Premier Commercial Properties, said an employee of the nearby JR's Saloon and Food, who would not give her name. A call to the business's listed telephone number would not go through. Anita Johnson, a real estate agent who worked for Premier until March, said ``four or five people'' typically worked in the office during the year she was there. A spokeswoman at Hennepin County Medical Center said the downtown Minneapolis hospital expected to treat four or five victims of from the explosion.

Holy crap! Australian man killed by shark on Great Barrier Reef

This appears to be a file photo that they used but it's scary enough for me! The shark got away...

sharkattack.jpg

08:22 AM EST Dec 14
CAIRNS, Australia (AP) - A 38-year-old Australian man bled to death Saturday after he was rescued from the jaws of a shark while spearfishing on the Great Barrier Reef, authorities said.
A marine biologist said Sunday he would examine the victim's wounds to determine the size and type of shark responsible for the attack in the World Heritage-listed marine park, an internationally renowned tourist destination.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was fishing alone at Opal Reef about 60 metres from his group's boat when his two friends saw the attack, police said in a statement.
His friends manoeuvred the boat over to pick him up and "noticed that there was a pool of blood around him," police said.
Steve Akers from the Queensland state Rescue Helicopter Service was one of the first to arrive at the scene with a doctor but the victim was already dead.

"They (the friends) heard him scream; they went over to him and obviously there was blood in the water and that is all they saw," Akers said.

"(They) then dragged him onto the vessel and then proceeded to stem the bleeding but obviously it didn't work."

Jury says Scott Peterson should die

Death.JPG

The jury that found Scott Peterson guilty of murdering his wife and unborn son decided Monday that the former fertilizer salesman should die for his crimes.

The six-man, six-woman jury reached its unanimous decision on its third day of deliberations, having spent about 11½ hours considering whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison – the only two options available to them after finding Peterson guilty of killing his 27-year-old wife, Laci, and her fetus on or around Christmas Eve 2002.

Their bodies were recovered almost five months later on the shore of the San Francisco Bay, near the spot where Scott Peterson said he was fishing alone on the day his wife vanished.
